GIS class project: Walkability Assessment

San Jose State University
Class Presentation: Walkability Assessment using GIS | Residential neighborhood in San Jose, CA.
Introduction:
students from two urban planning courses, transportation and GIS, studied the walkability of the Five Wounds/Brookwood Terrace neighborhood (shown above). The goal of this joint project was to assess this neighborhood’s streets, sidewalks and intersections as they relate to pedestrian safety and enjoyment. Following this assessment, our team assembled maps that illustrate important shortcomings in the study area. Findings and specific policy recommendations to improve walkability have been provided for each issue we identified.
Analysis:
The following sections discuss quality of intersections near schools. For each of the subjects we have explained its significance to walkability, and have included pertinent findings and recommendations.

Findings

2 key recommendations of this study:
1. Enhancing 19th Street and 21st Street as pedestrian corridors.
2. Initiating a “clear sidewalks” program—have relatively high feasibility.
